Our specialist peripatetic departments offer a continuous pathway of support for learners across the Falkirk authority, ensuring that expertise is available from the very beginning of a child's journey.

Support from Diagnosis to Educational Setting

We understand that the period following a diagnosis can be a time of significant transition for families. Our Visiting Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People (VToDs) and Teachers of Children and Young People with Visual Impairment (Q/TVIs) provide essential home-based support for infants and pre-school aged children. By working directly with parents and carers in the home environment, we help develop early communication skills, encourage visual and tactile awareness, and specialised learning strategies well before a child begins their early years placement.

Specialised Support

A core part of our outreach is ensuring that interventions translate into educational success.

• For Deaf Learners: Our VToDs provide audiology support, helping families and schools manage hearing aids, cochlear implants, and Roger microphone systems. We work closely with NHS Audiology Clinic and Crosshouse, ensuring that every child has optimum "access to sound" for learning.
• For Learners with a Visual Impairment: Our Q/TVIs plan carefully with schools, families and other professionals to support the transition to nursery/school. Within the educational setting, assessment of children's functional vision and collaborative working is ongoing. In order to provide access to the curriculum and promote independence, we support children to use: low-vision aids, electronic magnifiers, technology including braille technology and to develop IT skills as necessary. Our team are all proficient in teaching contracted UEB braille. We liaise with Opthamology and families to understand children's vision and support their individual needs. we work closely with Falkirk's Habilitation Officer who is skilled in helping children navigate their homes and schools safely and independently.

Empowering Learners in Every Setting

As children grow, our outreach teams continue to provide bespoke support within Early Years provisions, mainstream schools, and ASN provisions. We work collaboratively with school staff to promote accessible environments and to provide curriculum support for learners that takes account of each learner's unique sensory needs.

From initial diagnosis through to the senior phase, our Visiting Teachers provide the expert link between clinical information and educational success.
